Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is an infection around the nerve and skin around it. Shingles can cause a painful nerve rash with blisters, itching, numbness, tingling, and/or burning sensations. Most people will experience a burning, tingling, or itching sensation before the rash appears. The rash usually develops within 2–3 days. This may be followed by an intense burning or itching sensation in the areas where the shingles rash eventually appears. In some cases, the pain begins before any other symptoms appear.
